The Great Church: A Marvel of Faith and Heritage

The St. Mary’s Metropolitan Church is not just a place of worship; it is a monument to the spirit of Changanacherry. Often referred to as the Valiya Palli, its majestic presence has been the heart of our community for generations.

Historical Prestige

Consecrated on January 29, 1887, our church was once described by the British Government’s Imperial Gazetteer of India (1908) as “The finest Syro-Roman Church on the Malabar Coast.” This legacy of beauty and grace continues to welcome every visitor who steps through our doors.

A Labor of Love and Sacrifice

The church we see today took 15 years of dedicated labor to complete. It was born from the vision of Monsignor Cyriac Kandankary and the architectural genius of Varghese Mathu Maleikal (Mathuachan). During times of financial hardship, the faithful of Changanacherry pledged their own belongings and even carried construction materials on their heads from the local boat jetty—a true testament to a “people’s church.”

Architectural Wonders

  • The Altar (Madbaha): A breathtaking representation of the Holy Trinity, adorned with intricate carvings that create a sense of “heaven on earth.”
  • The Five Bells: Brought all the way from France, these bells have called the faithful to prayer for over a century.
  • The Ancient Granite Cross: Standing proudly in front of the church, this 16th-century cross is a silent witness to our long-standing history.
